According to a newspaper article today:
New York hasn't recovered from a stubborn recession that began nine months before 9/11. New York has lost nearly a quarter of a million jobs since January 2001 - in vital industries like banking, brokerage, airlines and tourist hospitality.
Gotham has shed jobs at more than three times the national rate; over 21/2 years, an astounding 6.4 percent of all employment positions in New York have simply vanished.
New York is still languishing as the nation marks signs of a slow recovery. Economic activity has inched up nationwide for nearly two years - a sign of job growth to come. But in New York City, production continues to decline and there are no clear prospects for new jobs in sight.
New York lost another 7,200 private-sector jobs in the second quarter of this year. Some cities are starting to add jobs.
