EMC boosts layoff figures

EMC Corp., coming off a string of acquisitions, is cutting more jobs as it consolidates its operations.

The Hopkinton-based tech company said late Friday that it plans to cut 1,350 jobs by the end of 2007, 100 more than the company originally announced in October. EMC, which makes data storage systems, also said it planned to take a pretax charge of $175 million in its fourth quarter to pay for the restructuring -- at the high end of its original estimate.

Still, EMC (NYSE: EMC) has continued to hire in key areas, off-setting some of the job reductions. EMC has 8,000 workers in Massachusetts and has dozens of jobs advertised on its Web. The company is primarily adding technical workers to develop hardware and software.
