Winnebago to layoff more than 200
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Winnebago Industries Inc. officials say they will lay off more than 200 workers as the recreation vehicle industry continues to see a downturn.
In a conference call with industry analysts to discuss the retirement of CEO Bruce Hertzke and the succession of President Bob Olson to chief executive, the company confirmed the layoffs.
Olson says the company postponed downsizing as long as possible, but high fuel prices and low consumer confidence has dampened motor home purchases and 2008 sales are expected to be flat.
Olson says he expects 200 to 225 workers to be laid off.
Forest City-based Winnebago employs 3,200 workers.
Its last round of layoffs was in 2005 when 170 workers lost their jobs, but most were hired back within 30 days.
