The Job Market: September 15, 2008 Emergency Edition


A little more than a year ago, I wrote a blog article called "Game, Set & Match" on the day the subprime mortgage crisis hit. In it, I wrote that I thought the credit crisis derived from these events would be staggering and that I thought it spelled the end of the boom in the job market.

I have sinse added that we had three events occurring simultaneously that would be catastrophic to the economy--subprime, rising oil prices and a new President (no knock on either man; business just hates change and wouldn't know how to plan for the future).

I must now say we have a 4th and that I may have been too optimistic. The fourth is the collapse of Lehman, the acquisition of Merrill Lynch in what appears like a fire sale and the potential collapse of AIG (they are asking the federal government for $40 billion of guarantees, saying that without fresh capital and if they are downgraded by rating agencies, they will go out of business).

Words cannot expess the dire threat to the US economy this staggering turn of events portends.

If you are looking for work, I encourage you to do whatever you can to find work as fast as you can. 

The word depression is going to become part of the common vocabulary.
