Auto parts maker to lay off 186 in Indiana
HUNTINGTON, Ind. - Auto parts maker Meridian Automotive Systems Inc. has told Indiana officials it plans to close a plant and eliminate 186 jobs by the end of January.
The Michigan company told the Indiana Department of Workforce Development on Wednesday it will begin eliminating jobs next week at its Huntington plant.
Auto suppliers have been taking a beating as automakers cut production in the face of declining sales. October sales figures were the worst for the industry in decades.
Allen Park-based Meridian has a strong presence in Indiana, with additional plants in Angola, Grabill, Rushville and Shelbyville. The only layoff notice filed with the state Wednesday was for the Huntington plant.
The company emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2006.
