Layoffs at IBM in Essex Junction
Some IBM employees reporting for their shifts in Essex Junction Tuesday got the news that they were being let go.
IBM officials have now confirmed the layoffs. The affected workers are what are called long-term supplemental employees.
It's the latest in a series of cutbacks this year.
Back in June, 180 employees were laid off -- 70 long-term supplemental employees and 110 permanent positions.
And in August, it was paychecks that were cut. The company announced it would eliminate a 20 percent premium given to manufacturing employees who work 12-hour shifts. That is scheduled to take effect in January and affects 3,500 employees at IBM plants in Essex Junction, Fishkill and Poughkeepsie, New York. IBM officials told us at that time that the move was a cost-saving measure designed to keep the company competitive in a tough economy.
