ABX announces more layoffs
ABX Air, in a filing with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, said it will eliminate 228 more jobs at its sorting and shipping hub in Wilmington.
The layoffs, which are permanent, began Dec. 4 and will continue through Dec. 19, ABX said in the filing.
The cargo airline had announced more than 400 layoffs since November, when DHL, the company’s primary customer, said it will end point-to-point U.S. shipping operations and close its U.S. hubs. ABX operates a package sorting and shipping hub at the Wilmington Air Park, where several thousand jobs are at stake as DHL is poised to pull out.
The most recent announcement will bring the number of announced Wilmington layoffs to more than 650. ABX is also closing facilities in Waco, Texas, and Kansas City, Mo., with hundreds of job losses in those cities.
ABX is a subsidiary of Wilmington-based Air Transport Services Group (NASDAQ: ATSG). The company has said it hopes to sell the aircraft to DHL that the package shipping firm no longer needs as it closes its Wilmington hub. With the proceeds, ATSG will covert its remaining 767 aircraft and lease them, or use them in its ACMI cargo business.
