Only On 10: Carcieri To Announce State Layoff Plan
PROVIDENCE -- Gov. Don Carcieri is giving himself a 30-day deadline for announcing a plan to cut 1,000 state jobs, NBC 10's Bill Rappleye reported Wednesday.Rappleye said the governor has been meeting with department heads all summer to come up with recommendations.
Carcieri announced in June that he was going to cut 1,000 state jobs."We're going through every single department, and we floated up and we reviewed through that process a whole bunch of recommendations that frankly are not enough," Carcieri said. "I had a cabinet meeting (Wednesday morning) where I said, 'We're basically not there yet.'
"My goal is sometime over the next month, is that I want to have a plan in place, detailed, where all of the elements get us where we're going to get to.
"Rappleye said the governor's plan entails notifying the individuals involved and speaking with the unions about the layoffs.Union leaders told NBC 10 that they didn't want to comment on the governor's deadline until they see the details of the plan.
Rappleye said there's a projected $150 million deficit for the 2009 fiscal year.Carcieri said the layoffs would save the state about $26 million for the 2008 fiscal year and $40 million in 2009.
