Tobyhanna depot will lay off employees

— JAMES HAGGERTY

TOBYHANNA — A military contractor at Tobyhanna Army Depot will lay off 200 to 250 employees, the depot reported.

The furloughs will take place this month as electronics, electrical and sheet metal work subcontracted to Defense Support Services declines, the depot announced.

The depot entered a contract with Defense Support Services in 2003 for temporary personnel to handle increasing work volumes related to combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Tobyhanna employs more than 4,200 civilians and South Carolina-based Defense Support Services employs about 900 at the facility, the depot reported.

Total employment at the facility was about 5,900 before the layoff was announced.
