February, 2006

These are busy times for me, in the way I like them to be busy.

First of all, my son, Jack, had his 5th birthday on February 6th. We had 17 of his friends to the house plus many of their parents and the kids had a blast playing with clay, eating and playing. I led a mean game of Simple Simon.

I've launched by free ezine, Head Hunt Your Own Job, to help people develop more tools and get more information to help them with their job search (To sign up, go to www.sayhi.to/JeffAltman) and signed a deal to do a book and audio series as well.

Oh, yes, and jobs are becoming plentiful again for technologists and people scarce. And what's fun is to see the national press pick up on some things I've been writing about for a while--the rise of managerial positions and the beginning of jobs returning to the US from India because of cost.

The rise of managerial positions comes from several different trends coming together--outsourcing and the increase of new development going on in many organizations. People are needed to manage offshore resources at both the consulting level and the user level, resulting in more jobs opening. The second is that more firms are investing in new technology again. FINALLY!

And that leads to more opportunities in quality assurance, technical writing, development, as well as support. A client of mine wanted to hire someone to manage a documentation effort. The person they hired came from their industry and had been in consulting before. They offered her $115000 plus bonus plus a host of perks. Now that's a great story in itself buut what is to also be noted was that theis person also had two other offers, one to remain in consulting at a great rate; the other with another large firm to join in a staff role. Even duringthe dotcom phase, technical writers rarely received this kind of attention!

Finally, according to a recent survey, the securities industry has has increased the number of jobs by almost 25000 from November, 2004 to November, 2005. That number is way low. There are so many companies hiring people in financial services across the USA, not just in technology. I have no idea where the surveys get their alleged data from but some of it, like the government's data, is ridiculous.
