EDS to lay off 147 workers in Federal Way

Electronic Data Systems is laying off 147 employees at its Federal Way location, the company confirmed today.
The cutback came after one of EDS's clients decided to divide a contract among multiple vendors.
Liz Bonet, a spokeswoman for the Plano, Texas-based IT outsourcing company, declined to name the client but said the scope of EDS's piece of the contract has been "significantly reduced."
She confirmed figures reported in a filing Thursday with the state Employment Security Department: The layoffs begin Aug. 24 and will be phased in over four months.
Bonet did not provide a figure for the company's total work force in Federal Way or in Washington as a whole.
"It's fair to say EDS will still have a solid presence in Washington state" after the layoffs, she said.
In a regulatory filing earlier this year, EDS and its subsidiaries reported about 131,000 employees globally.
Bonet said the Federal Way employees have known of the layoffs for some time. They will be offered severance, a payment equal to one month of health insurance and outplacement assistance, she said.
